I’ve made some changes to where this blog is hosted.
If you’ve been reading for a while, you know this isn’t exactly unusual. I’ve moved this blog more times than I can count.
For about the last year, it’s been hosted on Micro.blog.
Micro.blog is a great micro blogging and social site. Manton and his team have done an excellent job here. I’ve also had my social and (longer form) blog posts integrated together.
My Micro.blog setup has been creating a little more mental overhead than I want. I found myself wanting a space dedicated solely to longer-form writing, so I decided to split up the blog and microblog.
Why Ghost?
I’ve been running and maintaining a blog since about 2001. That’s a long time. My first ‘blog’ was just some HTML pages that I manually updated.
I’ve used a variety of blogging platforms over the years, including Movable Type, WordPress, Tumblr, Jekyll, Micro.blog, and now Ghost.
For years, I have been cross-posting some of my blog posts to Medium. I still think Medium has one of the best writing editors available anywhere. I thought about hosting on Medium, but I ultimately decided against it.
I’ve settled on Ghost. I’ve used Ghost in the past. They have a very similar (if not identical) post editor.
When I used Ghost in the past, I used DigitalPress for hosting. I considered going back, but decided to try something new. This time I’m hosting with MagicPages. I have nothing against DigitalPress, but wanted to try somewhere new.
I’ve been very happy with the setup so far.
Seeded the site
In order to prevent the site from being empty when I started, I seeded the blog with a few entries. I didn’t bring everything over. Looking over the archives, many of my older posts aren’t worth republishing. But I’ve added a few here.
This post is the first new bit of content being posted to the site.
What about Social?
I’m going to stick with micro.blog for social posts. Like I said before, I am very happy with micro.blog. The support is excellent and I enjoy supporting an indie developer.
My Micro.blog posts are still cross-posted to Bluesky and Mastodon, and that isn’t changing.
If I’ve set things up correctly, the blog posts from Ghost will also be posted to the micro.blog site.
As a bit of an aside, I consume my Bluesky, micro.blog, and Mastodon feeds through IconFactory’s Tapestry app. I find it the perfect way to consume all of this content in one place.
Pruning old posts
One thing I’ve done quite a lot over the years is delete older posts. I’m going to continue that on both this blog and micro.blog.
I also have Mastodon set up to automatically delete posts that are older than six months. I love this feature; I wish more sites had it.
I do keep a record of these older posts. I have most of them saved onto my computer (in my notes app) in case I ever want to come back to them (or populate a new blog).
Do I need to update my RSS Feed?
Yep. Probably. I am not going to try very hard to point the old RSS URLs to the new spot. I’ve never been good about this, and I’m not going to start now. Sorry.
